AIR NATIONAL GUARD
14 members due back in Hilo
Fourteen members of the 291st Combat Communications Squadron of the Hawai'i Air National Guard were expected to return to Hilo Saturday after spending nearly six months at forward operating locations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The Air Guard members were part of the Expeditionary Communications Squadron under the 40th Air Expeditionary Wing.
The 291st is part of the 201st Combat Communications Group with the Hawai'i Air National Guard.
The 201st Group's mission is to provide command and control communications and air traffic control services for U.S. Air Force combat air forces.
It also supports emergency Air Force communications for Hawai'i, Department of Defense, in response to emergencies originating from either human or natural causes.
MARINES
MCBH dedicates streets to fallen
Marine Corps Base Hawai'i will dedicate streets to three fallen Hawai'i Marines today at a base ceremony.
The streets will honor Gunnery Sgt. Kenyu Shimabukuro, Sgt. Sisifo Faleafine, and Sgt. William Kekahuna, Vietnam-era Marines who lost their lives in service to their country.
The dedications are part of a ceremony to officially open 184 family housing units that are part of a $40.9 million improvement project.
The 9:15 a.m. ceremony will include a Hawaiian blessing and the Marine Forces Pacific Band.
NAVY
Rear Adm. Kubic leaves command
Rear Adm. Charles Kubic relinquished command of Pacific Division, Naval Engineering Facilities Command on Friday after a three-year tenure.
He was relieved by Rear Adm. (select) Richard Cellon, who comes to Hawai'i from Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, where he was commander.
As commander of Pacific Division and the Third Naval Construction Brigade, Kubic supervised the planning, design and construction of shore support facilities throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans area and Southeast Asia.
Kubic also directed Seabees operating throughout the Pacific theater in support of U.S. Pacific Fleet operations.
Kubic engaged Seabees in support of operations in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Diego Garcia and the Philippines.
