"He won't miss too much action," coach Steve Mariucci said yesterday. "I think we're lucky it wasn't a season-ender. He got hit pretty good on a short-yardage play."

Ulbrich was injured during the 49ers' 17-10 exhibition loss to Oakland on Saturday night when he came in late on a tackle. Mariucci had feared the injury would be more serious.

Ulbrich, a third-year pro who grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and played at the University of Hawai'i, started 14 games for the 49ers last season, finishing second on the team with 92 tackles.

Jamie Winborn, who started four games for San Francisco as a rookie last season, will take Ulbrich's place in the starting lineup.

The 49ers (1-3) finish the preseason Wednesday night against San Diego, and open the regular season on Sept. 5 against the New York Giants.
