Perkins rolls into World quarterfinals

Advertiser Staff

Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa recorded the top scores of the day to advance to the quarterfinals of the Oxbow World Longboard Championship yesterday at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Perkins, the No. 2 seed in the contest, won two heats yesterday, as the third and fourth rounds were completed in 3-foot waves.

In the third round, Perkins caught waves that received scores of 9.5 (out of 10) and 8.15 to defeat fellow Hawai'i surfer and his cousin, Dino Miranda.

In the fourth round, Perkins received scores of 9.25 and 8.75 as he eliminated Brazil's Olimpio Batista. Perkins' total score of 18.0 in that heat is the highest of the contest so far.

"Two pretty high scoring waves off the top," Perkins said of his fourth-round victory. "Not so much the bigger waves, but they turned out to be good, so I'll take it."

Perkins, who won the world championship in 1996, is the only Hawai'i competitor remaining. He is scheduled to face Brazil's Amaro Matos in the quarterfinals.

The top seed, California's Colin McPhillips, also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Three Hawai'i competitors were eliminated yesterday: Rusty Keaulana and Duane DeSoto lost in the third round; Chris Vandervoort lost in the fourth round. DeSoto, who was the No. 6 seed, lost by 1/4 of a point to Brazil's Paulo Kid.

Five others from Hawai'i were eliminated in the sixth round: Joel Centeio, Shane Dorian, Bruce Irons, Jamie O'Brien and Fred Patacchia Jr. The contest is part of surfing's World Qualifying Series and does not count toward the world championship standings.
