Basketball star Wily returning to Kahuku

Advertiser Staff

Junior LaToya Wily, who helped Kalaheo win its fifth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball championship in May, will transfer back to Kahuku tomorrow, she said.

Wily was Kalaheo's leading scorer and leading rebounder last season after she transferred from Kahuku "to learn more about the game" from Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado, she said. She was named first-team All-OIA East and honorable mention all-state.

"I learned a lot, but I still have more to learn," said Wily, who is 6 feet tall.

She is returning to Kahuku because "I need to be closer to my family. I only have two more years of high school left and I'd really like to spend that with my childhood friends," she said. She stayed with an uncle in Kailua while attending Kalaheo.

SURFING

• Williams ousted: Ross Williams of Hale'iwa was eliminated in the seventh round of the Rip Curl Pro yesterday at Hossegor, France.

Williams was the only Hawai'i surfer remaining during yesterday's final day of competition.

Richard Lovett of Australia won the event, which was completed in 4-foot waves.

The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series, and did not count toward the world championship standings.

• Oxbow postponed: The Oxbow World Longboard Championship was postponed because of small waves yesterday at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Contest officials have until Saturday to complete the final day of competition.

Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa is the only Hawai'i competitor remaining. He is scheduled to face Brazil's Amaro Matos in the quarterfinals.

VOLLEYBALL

• Stanley leads U.S.: Kaiser High grad Clay Stanley, a former University of Hawai'i player, scored 13 points to help the U.S. men's national volleyball team defeat Greece, 25-23, 27-25, 25-23, in the first of five scheduled friendly matches last night in Glyfada, Greece.

Stanley had nine kills and a match-high four aces to help the U.S. team even its season record to 12-12.

• Kahuku girls win: Kahuku defeated Kamehameha, 11-6, 11-7, Saturday in the championship game of the 32-team Longy Okamoto Girls Classic at McKinley High.

Kahuku beat Punahou, 11-8, 9-11, 15-7, to reach the final.
