Maryknoll School celebrates 75th

Exactly 75 years to the day that Maryknoll School opened, students, teachers, families and alumni will gather on campus to celebrate the special birthday Sept. 6.

Retired Catholic Bishop Joseph Ferrario will open the event at 8:25 a.m. with a blessing ceremony in the grade school courtyard.

In September 1927, the ship City of Honolulu docked at Aloha Tower, bringing half a dozen nuns from the Maryknoll Sisters in New York to found the school.

Maryknoll's 1,400 students and guests are expected to attend the event, which will include a presentation of lei and flowers to the statue of Mary. The event will also include the recognition of alumni who attended Maryknoll when the Catholic school first opened.

"This has been such an amazing year for all of us at Maryknoll," said school president Michael Baker. "We are so pleased to be celebrating our 75th anniversary and look forward to sharing our mission with the people of Hawai'i for many years to come."
