Other key OIA games

The spotlight may be on tonight's Kahuku-Wai'anae showdown at Aloha Stadium, but not all eyes will be on that matchup.

Several other key games highlight opening night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association. Here is a closer look at some of them (all are scheduled for 25 minutes after 5 p.m. JV games; records include preseason):


Campbell at Kailua

• WHERE: Kailua High School, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua

• RECORDS: Campbell 1-0; Kailua 1-0

• LAST WEEK: Campbell defeated Kalaheo, 30-0; Kailua defeated Hawai'i Prep, 40-0.

• NOTABLE: Campbell running back Shaunsey Saito, one of the OIA's top returning rushers, also starts for the Sabers' soccer and baseball teams ... Kailua coach Darren Johnson said his offensive line will be even bigger than last year's, which averaged 287 pounds per man ... The Surfriders return seven starters on offense and nine on defense.


Castle at Mililani

• WHERE: Mililani High School, 95-1200 Meheula Parkway, Mililani

• RECORDS: Castle 0-1; Mililani 1-0

• LAST WEEK: Castle lost to Leilehua, 23-15; Mililani defeated Kaiser, 31-7

• NOTABLE: Mililani fullback Peter Raneses rushed for 138 yards on 10 carries against Kaiser, in just three quarters of action ... Trojans quarterback Sean Fujimoto ran for two touchdowns, on runs of 1 and 9 yards ... Castle is using several two-way starters this season. "We're asking a lot of our players," coach Nelson Maeda said. "We'll have to be disciplined and outwork the other team."


McKinley at 'Aiea

• WHERE: 'Aiea High School, 98-1276 Ulune St., 'Aiea

• RECORDS: McKinley 1-0; 'Aiea 0-1

• LAST WEEK: McKinley defeated Kealakehe, 28-6; 'Aiea lost to Punahou, 28-13.

• NOTABLE: McKinley returns seven starters on offense, including junior quarterback Abel Werner, who is the first underclassman in at least 10 years to be named team captain ... Tigers coach David Tanuvasa is impressed so far with his team's chemistry. "This is one of the best groups I've had in terms of that," Tanuvasa said. "They work well together and respect each other." ... 'Aiea lost many key starters from last year's 10-2 team to graduation, but Na Ali'i also drew 68 players to fall camp.


Roosevelt at Waipahu

• WHERE: Waipahu High School, 94-1211 Farrington Highway, Waipahu

• RECORDS: Roosevelt 1-0; Waipahu 1-0

• LAST WEEK: Roosevelt defeated Pearl City, 14-0; Waipahu beat Moanalua 45-13.

• NOTABLE: Roosevelt used two quarterbacks last week, sophomore La'akea Moikeha in the first half and senior Bryson Borges in the second ... Rough Riders senior Cameron Kimura caught a 47-yard touchdown pass, made a sack and several tackles at defensive end and launched a couple of booming punts ... Waipahu running back Andy Hale scored five touchdowns against Moanalua, three receiving and two rushing ... Marauders linebacker Rusty Saole made 13 tackles.
