Leeward fires may be work of arsonist

By Scott Ishikawa
Advertiser Staff Writer

Fire officials believe an arsonist may be responsible for setting six brushfires Wednesday and Thursday on the Leeward Coast.

The fires have occurred near Kamaile Elementary and Wai'anae Intermediate schools, Kea'au Beach Park and near Ka'ena Point.

"These types of fires usually die down when school begins, and the area schools are well into the new school year," said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo. "That's why we feel this is the act of an adult firebug."

Leeward fire crews say six brushfires in two days is "highly unusual" for this time of the year.

The latest fire on Thursday near Wai'anae Intermediate burned 20 to 30 acres. A brushfire on Wednesday in almost the same location came close to homes.

Soo said some of the brushfires were set in isolated areas, making it difficult for firefighters to put out.

"We're very concerned if the fire takes off in those unaccessible areas, it will burn thousands of acres as well as endanger lives and property," he said. Large brushfires also take away valuable department manpower from other emergencies around the island, he said.

At least 10 fire units were called to each of the two fires near Wai'anae Intermediate.

The fires also affect residents in the area with respiratory problems, Soo added.

The department is asking the public to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in the area.

Anyone lighting the fires can be convicted of criminal property damage charges, which carry a maximum prison term of up to 10 years.
