Pig hunter injured in Makaha Valley

Fire crews airlifted an injured pig hunter out of Makaha Valley yesterday afternoon after he fell about 100 feet into a ravine two hours earlier.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, had hiked about five miles into the valley with three other pig hunters when he apparently slipped on moss at the top of the ravine and fell shortly before 11 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Department spokes-man Capt. Richard Soo.

An HFD helicopter plucked the man out of the dry river bed at 1:15 p.m. and took him to a nearby golf course, where an awaiting Army helicopter took him to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition. He has since been upgraded to guarded condition.

The man fractured both legs and was having difficulty breathing because of chest injuries, Soo said.

The party notified police by cellular phone and one of the hunters walked out of the valley to meet firefighters. The other hunters started a fire to help the helicopter crew locate them.

The uninjured pig hunters walked out of the valley without assistance.
