Kailua surpasses Campbell

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — For David Kaihenui, catching the football is like having the world in his hand.

The Kailua High senior wide receiver had four touchdown receptions to help the Surfriders drop Campbell, 47-18, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association interdivision game at Kailua's stadium.

"Once the ball is in the air, I gotta catch it or it's the end of the world," Kaihenui said.

The Surfriders (1-0 OIA East Red, 2-0 overall) fell behind 6-0 before responding with six consecutive TDs to build a 41-6 lead with five minutes, 16 seconds left in the third quarter to start the running clock. But the relentless Sabers (0-1 OIA West Red, 1-1) scored two early fourth-quarter touchdowns to get the clock back under normal conditions.

Kaihenui, who is 6 feet and 170 pounds, caught TD passes — three from quarterback Ranson Kepa from 54, 75 and 40 yards, and another for 69 from receiver Kealii Kalahiki on a flea flicker. He caught passes on the run, off screens and in stride. He had to leap between defenders for one TD reception. In all, he had seven receptions for 319 yards.

"Was kind of tough with my sprained finger, but I just counted on my quarterback to get me the ball," Kaihenui said. "You just gotta believe."

Kailua showed it could beat teams through the air and on the ground. Its first scoring drive went 77 yards on 13 plays — all passes, the last a 54-yard screen from Kepa to Kaihenui.

Then the Surfriders ran the ball six times in an eight-play, 68-yard drive that ended with Kimo Keo's 9-yard TD reception from Kepa.

Kailua coach Darren Johnson said Kaihenui can play Division I.

"Tonight is just a small portion of what he can do," Johnson said. "We do a lot more with him."

From then, Kailua went primarily with the pass with great success for early in the season, when teams are still trying working on their timing.

"We worked hard on it in the offseason," Johnson said. "Our quarterback had to fill big shoes tonight (with the graduation of three-year starter Taleki Mailau). At the beginning he was shaky, but once he got his rhythm down, he started connecting. But you have to credit the O-line (offensive line); they didn't give up any sacks."

Kepa completed 16-of-26 passes for 373 yards.

"Their passing game is potent," Campbell coach Tumoana Kenessey said. "They have speed on the outside. You have to give them credit for that."

Campbell took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 44-yard run by running back Shauncey-Blaine Saito, who found a seam in the defense and sprinted downfield.

After Kailua went up 41-6, Jonah Canionero got Campbell off the running clock with a 40-yard TD pass to Ali'ikea Basham. Later, 6-foot, 220-pound fullback Mapa Malupo scored on a 56-yard run.
