Hawai'i duo comes up short in qualifying

Hilo's Camie Hoshino and Christel Tomori failed to advance at the First LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament, which ended yesterday at Plantation Golf & Country Club, in Venice, Fla.

Hoshino closed with an even-par 72 for a four-day total of 301, and tied for 48th. Tomori was a shot back at 75—302. She tied for 53rd with, among others, 2001 U.S. Amateur champion Meredith Duncan.

The top 30 players advanced to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Oct. 7-10, in Florida. The cutoff came at 297.

There is a second LPGA Sectional Qualifying next month in California. Yesterday's medalist was Isabelle Beisiegel, from Montreal, at 69—285.


MORE GOLF

• Kimura qualifies for Mid-Am: Paul Kimura of Kane'ohe shot a 1-under 71 at Mid-Pacific Country Club on Thursday to capture Hawai'i's lone qualifying berth for the 2002 United States Mid-Amateur Championships.

The national tournament will be held Sept. 21-26 at the Stanwich Golf Club in Greenwich, Conn. Brandan Kop is the first alternate in the tournament.


SURFING

• Perkins finishes second: Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa placed second in the Oxbow World Longboard Championship yesterday at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Colin McPhillips of California defeated Perkins in the one-on-one final to successfully defend his world title in 3-foot waves.

Perkins beat Amaro Matos of Brazil in the quarterfinals, and then Beau Young of Australia in the semifinals before falling four points short of McPhillips in the final.

Midway through the final, McPhillips received scores of 9.4 and 9.25 for two long rides that gave him a lead he would not relinquish. In the final tally, McPhillips scored 18.65 (out of 20), while Perkins finished with 14.65.

"Going into the final, I felt pretty good," Perkins said. "After the first few waves, I started catching an edge and I guess I froze up when I needed to shine."

McPhillips received $15,000 for the victory. Perkins received $9,000.


VOLLEYBALL

• BYUH wins: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team opened up its season with a win, defeating Florida Tech, 3-0, yesterday at the Barry Invitational in Miami.

The Seasiders beat the Panthers, 30-21, 30-18, 30-24, led by Yu Chuan Weng's 19 kills and 11 digs. Chun Yi Long and Ashley Moeai each had 12 kills for BYUH.

BYU-Hawai'i faces defending NCAA Division II champion Barry today on the final day of the tournament.

• Chaminade wins two: The Chaminade University women's volleyball team won two matches on the road yesterday at the St. Mary's Tournament in San Antonio, Texas, to start its season.

In the first match, the Silverswords defeated the South Dakota Coyotes 3-2 (30-27, 24-30, 23-30, 30-23, 15-13).

In the second match, the Silverswords beat Alaska-Anchorage 3-1 (30-25, 22-20, 30-27, 30-24), led by Valasi Sepulona's 28 kills.

• Bown keys U.S. win: The United States swept Argentina at the 2002 Women's Volleyball World Championships at Sachsen Arena in Riesa, Germany, yesterday.

Middle blocker Heather Bown, who played for the University of Hawai'i in 1998 and '99, led Team USA with 13 points in the 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 victory, the first in Pool C for the Americans.


SOFTBALL

• U.S. tops Australia: Lovieanne Jung's three-run triple highlighted a four-run second inning as the United States defeated Australia 5-0 in the Japan Cup softball tournament yesterday at Yokohama, Japan. Felicity Witt, a former University of Hawai'i pitcher, went the distance, taking the loss for Australia. She gave up six hits, five earned runs, two walks and recorded two strikeouts.


HONORS

• Correa feted: Maui County honored local sports figure Vernon Correa by renaming Ballfield No. 3 at the War Memorial Complex in his honor.

Correa coached Pee Wee, Little League and Pony League teams, AJA baseball teams, girls' softball teams, and high school baseball teams. Several of his squads won local and state championships in the 1970s, and the St. Anthony High School baseball team he coached won the Maui Interscholastic League title in 1978.
