Case wins special election

Former state Rep. Ed. Case garnered 51 percent of the votes cast in the special election yesterday to fill the remainder of the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink's term in the 107th Congress beating out Mink's husband John and 36 other candidates.
With only 13.3 percent of the 347,922 eligible voters making it to the polls, Case drew 23,576 votes compared to 16,624 or 36 percent for Mink who was considered the sentimental favorite.
Republican John Carroll finished third with 1,933 votes and fellow party member Whitney Anderson was fourth with 942 votes.
Democrat Case said he is "deeply grateful to the voters of Hawai'i's 2nd District."
"This has been an unusual election under difficult circumstances," Case said. "But the voters have made their decision and I'll do the best job I can for them until the current term ends in January."
Case and 43 others will run in a second special election will be held Jan. 4 to fill Patsy Mink's seat in the 108th Congress. John Mink is not running in that race, but others contenders including former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi, state Sen. Colleen Hanabusa, state Rep. Barbara Marumoto, former state Rep. Bob McDermott and former state Sen. Matt Matsunaga, who lost his bid for lieutenant governor in the general election.
