UH to host NCAA women's volleyball opening rounds

The University of Hawai'i was one of 16 schools picked today to play host to NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships first- and second- round matches scheduled for Thursday and Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The No. 2-ranked Rainbow Wahine (30-1) were given the tournament's No. 6 seed and will open play in the Central Regional against Western Kentucky (33-4). Washington (19-10) and Colorado State (22-9) will play in the other first-round match in Hawai'i scheduled for Thursday. The winners will play in the second round on Friday.

No. 1 Southern California received the top seed in the tournament and is in the West Regional. The Trojans were followed by Stanford (Pacific), Nebraska (Central), Northern Iowa (East), Florida (East) and Hawai'i.

Teams winning both matches will move on to regional play December 13-15 at four campus locations yet to be determined. The regional host sites will be determined by the committee after the results of the first two rounds. The regional winners will advance to the semifinals and final hosted by the University of New Orleans and the Sun Belt Conference in New Orleans Arena December 19 and 21.
