Abuse group gets $5,500

Verizon Wireless has awarded a $5,500 grant to the Hawai'i State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, a statewide coalition of domestic violence programs aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of battered women.

The grant is part of Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program, a nationwide initiative that supports agencies' efforts to help victims rebuild their lives.

As a result of HopeLine and the company's predecessor's phone recycling programs, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 500,000 used wireless phones to benefit domestic violence victims and advocacy groups since 1995. Today, Verizon Wireless stores throughout the country welcome donations of wireless phones that no longer are being used.

Verizon Wireless refurbishes, recycles and/or sells collected phones for parts, using the proceeds to provide grants and phones for distribution by domestic violence shelters. The company has donated voice mailboxes to shelters so women have a discreet way to receive messages from potential landlords and employers.
