Utah State stops Vulcans in Hilo Shootout finale

Spencer Nelson hit 8-of-9 field-goal attempts and scored 27 points to lead Utah State to a 71-60 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in the Hilo Shootout basketball tournament at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium yesterday.

Utah State (5-0) finished the round-robin tournament 3-0. Hilo was 1-2 in the tournament and is 2-2 overall.

Kyle Bartholomew scored 14 points to lead Hilo.

In yesterday's first game, J.J. Sola hit six straight free throws during the second overtime period to help Drake (2-2) down Vermont (3-2), 83-78.

In Saturday's games, UH-Hilo defeated Vermont, 69-66, and Utah State stopped Drake, 73-61.


MEETING

• Na Koa: University of Hawai'i football head coach June Jones and defensive line coach Vantz Singletary will be the speakers at today's Na Koa Football Club meeting at the All-Star Hawai'i in Waikiki.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m.


TENNIS

• National champs: Jessica Broadfoot and Adriann Gin, juniors at Punahou School, won the USTA National Girls 16 doubles championship yesterday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Broadfoot and Gin won four matches in the three-day tournament to advance to the final. They beat the No. 1 seed, Clarissa Fermin and Canna Furuta of California, 9-1, for the championship.

Broadfoot and Gin are qualified for the Super National Tournament in Phoenix later this month.
