Tulane or South Florida eyed for Hawai'i Bowl

Advertiser Staff

It looks like either Tulane or South Florida will provide the opposition for the University of Hawai'i football team in the inaugural ConAgra Foods Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Day.

"That's the plan as of today," said Pete Derzis, senior vice prsident of ESPN Regional Television, which operates the game.

If Cincinnati beats East Carolina Friday night, Tulane (7-5 overall, 4-4 in Conference USA) will play Warriors on Dec. 25 at Aloha Stadium and the Bearcats (6-6) will play in the New Orleans Bowl. Tulane has finished its season.

An East Carolina victory would send South Florida (9-2) to play UH, put Tulane in the hometown New Orleans Bowl and keep the Bearcats out of the postseason.

The Hawai'i Bowl is one of five bowls with tie-ins to Conference USA. The conference's other bowl-eligible teams have all already been placed.

Texas Christian is going to the Liberty Bowl to play Colorado State; Louisville is pledged to meet Marshall in the GMAC Bowl and Southern Mississippi is committed to play a Big 12 foe in the Houston Bowl.
