Kaua'i's Irons wins world surf title

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i's Andy Irons, 24, became the third male surfer from Hawai'i to win the the Professional World Championship during the final day of the Rip Curl Cup today at Sunset Beach.

Irons was eliminated in the quarterfinals, but his closest competitor, Luke Egan of Australia, also was eliminated in the quarters. That clinched the title for Irons.

Irons entered the event with a 1,000-point lead on Egan, who needed to make the final of Rip Curl Cup in order to catch Irons.

Irons joins Derek Ho (1993) and Sunny Garcia (2000) as the only surfers from Hawai'i to win the World Championship, which has been in existence since 1976. Ho is from the North Shore and Garcia is from Wai'anae.
