Body may be that of missing man

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A body believed to be that of John Harrington, who has been missing since Nov. 20, was found Saturday in the Mahaulepu area, according to the mayor's office on Kaua'i.

Authorities are trying to identify the body and determine the cause of death.

Officials said the clothes on the recovered body matches those last worn by Harrington, 55, who is mentally disabled.

Harrington was last seen on Nov. 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Po'ipu Beach Park, where he and his

caretaker were eating lunch. After lunch, Harrington went for a walk and never returned, police said.

Police are still investigating.

Pedestrian remains in critical condition

A 64-year-old pedestrian remained in critical condition yesterday after he was hit by a truck near Sunset Beach Sunday.

The accident occurred at 6:45 a.m. along Kamehameha Highway about 140 feet north of Pupukea Road, police said.

A man driving a 1986 blue Toyota truck headed Kahuku-bound struck the pedestrian, according to police. The impact threw the pedestrian onto a 1999 Kia sedan.

The victim was flown to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. Neither driver was hurt.

The pedestrian was dressed in all black clothing, police said. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident, police said.

Sinkhole closes Nanakuli road

A 12-inch water main ruptured and caused a portion of Nanakuli Avenue fronting the Nanakuli fire station to collapse yesterday afternoon.

The sinkhole was about 10 feet wide and 10 feet deep and forced police to close Nanakuli Avenue between Pua and Mano avenues. Motorists were directed to a detour along Haleakala Avenue.

Crews were repairing the pipe late last night and were hoping to complete their work by this morning, said Honolulu Board of Water Supply spokeswoman Denise DeCosta. The cause of the break was under investigation, she said.

The broken pipe cut off water service to 10 homes and the fire station. A car driven by a woman fell about a foot into the hole, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, a fire spokesman said.

Hatchet-wielding robber sought

Police are looking for a man who used a hatchet to rob two men at a McCully home early yesterday.

Two men were watching television at a Kapi'olani Boulevard residence at 12:45 a.m. when they heard a knock at the front door, police said. A man wearing a blue-hooded jacket entered the home with a hatchet and demanded money and jewelry.

The man ran off with cash and other valuables, police said.

Motorcycle crash victim at Queen's

A 16-year-old boy remained at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday after he lost control of a motorcycle on Diamond Head Road and hit a tree Sunday, police said.

The motorcycle was westbound at 12:35 a.m. when the driver failed to make a turn along the roadway, losing control of his 1992 Honda Nighthawk and hitting the tree, police said.

Hospital officials would not disclose the boy's current condition because he is a minor.
