Author will read to kids at library

Author Sandi Takayama will read from her new book, "The Musubi Man's New Friend," 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hawai'i State Library, at the corner of King and Punchbowl streets.

The free program will be held in the library's Edna Allyn Room for Children and is part of a series of special holiday storytime programs.

In "The Musubi Man's New Friend," the feisty ball of rice who outran and outwitted a pack of pursuers in "The Musubi Man: Hawai'i's Gingerbread Man," makes a lovable friend and takes on a new challenge.

The reading will be followed by a crafts activity for children.

Other holiday events are scheduled for Dec. 14, Dec. 21 and Dec. 28. For more information, call 586-3510.

Hiker rescued near Kahalu'u

Fire crews rescued a hiker stranded in the mountains above Kahalu'u yesterday morning.

Several fire units, including Honolulu Fire Department's Air One helicopter, arrived at the mountainous area behind Kamakoi Road shortly after 9 a.m., when an area resident heard someone call for help, said HFD spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

The hiker, believed to be in his 50s, had walked into the area through the Pearl City side of the mountain.

He did not return home Sunday evening, and his wife reported him missing yesterday morning.

Fire helicopter crews brought the uninjured man out at 10 a.m., Tejada said.

Poet program receives grant

Starbucks Foundation has awarded a $10,000 literacy grant to Windward Community College's Star Poets program, which provides poetry workshops for students, teachers, parents and community members.

Teacher-writer Susan Lee St. John of Poet-in-the-Schools will lead lessons at schools and in the community, including a free community workshop from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at The Contemporary Museum.

The workshop, "Language as Clothing," is being held in conjunction with the Lesley Dill art exhibit.

Workshops are also planned for Feb. 8 and May 10.

The grant also provides for Windward Community College students interested in teaching and community service to assist the poet-in-the-schools for college credits and classroom experience.

The program is also accepting entries from students in grades 3 to 12 on all islands for the Star Poets 2003 competition. Entry forms are available at all Starbucks stores on O'ahu, Maui and the Big Island.

Students may enter as many poems as they wish on any topic as long as each poem doesn't exceed 20 lines.

Contest details are available online. Entry deadline is Jan. 15.

To register for the workshop, call 526-1322 on weekdays. For poetry contest questions, call Libby Young at 235-7396 or Jill Wheatman at 396-7571.
