"A Thanksgiving Fund-raiser" for Ann Kang, Iolani's longtime teacher and girls volleyball coach, generated more than $80,000 on Nov. 26.

The event was held at Pacific Beach Hotel's grand ballroom and about 1,600 tickets were sold at $30 apiece. Some people paid more than the suggested donation price of the ticket, said Cathy Lee Chong, the event's publicity chairwoman.

In addition, a silent auction that night raised about $33,000, and more money was raised through a boutique selling baked goods and other products.

Proceeds from the event will go toward defraying medical costs for Kang, who is suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — a life-threatening nervous disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Many people who were unable to attend the fund-raiser sent in donations anyway. Donations can still be made by depositing a check to "Friends of Ann Kang" at any First Hawaiian Bank branch. For more information, e-mail FriendsofAnnKang@aol.com
