Three earn volleyball All-America honors

Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball player Yu Chuan Weng was named AVCA Freshman of the Year and was one of three Hawai'i Division II players to earn All-America first team honors yesterday.

BYUH's Weng, Chun Yi Lin and Hawai'i Pacific's Susy Garbelotti were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's 22nd annual All-America team.

Garbelotti was an AVCA All-America first-team selection in 2000, while Weng and Lin are freshmen. The AVCA will present the All-America awards tomorrow at the Elite Eight Tournament banquet at West Texas A&M. A player of the year will be selected at the banquet.

The third-ranked BYUH Seasiders will face 25th-ranked New Haven (Conn.) Thursday in the first round of the Elite Eight Tournament in Canyon, Texas. BYUH was the Pacific Region champion while New Haven won the Northeast Region.

BASKETBALL

HPU's Walters honored: Hawai'i Pacific's Nic Walters earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors for his performances in last week's victories over St. Mary's (Texas) and Carleton College (Minn.).

The senior guard from Salinas, Calif., scored a career-high 33 points against Carleton in an

85-81 overtime win. He also grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists in that game. Against St. Mary's, Walters scored 20 points and handed out six assists.

For the week, Walters was 20-of-37 from the field (.541) and 10-of-14 from the free-throw line (.714). He combined for 53 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists.

TENNIS

BYUH women ranked No. 1: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team is ranked No. 1 in the preseason edition of the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings for Division II teams.

The Hawai'i Pacific and BYU-Hawai'i men are ranked Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, and the Hawai'i Pacific women are No. 16.

BYU-Hawai'i's Adrienn Hegedus is No. 1 in women's singles and Jan Krejci is the top-ranked player in men's singles.

The BYUH men's and women's teams are the defending Division II national champions.

GOLF

Hayashi, Carll lead tourney: Kevin Hayashi and Kevin Carll of Pearl Country Club lead by two strokes after the first round of the E-Z-GO Head Pro-Assistant Pro Championships yesterday at Hualalai Golf Club.

The pair shot a 9-under-par 63 and lead Makena Resort's Kirk Nelson and Brian Sasada, who shot 65. Jim Richardson and Clayton Beaver of Ko Olina are three off the pace.

The final round will start at 9 a.m. today.
