LEEWARD

Anti-DUI effort starts Saturday

The Wai'anae Coast's 17th annual "Live and Let Live" Don't Drink and Drive Traffic Safety Campaign will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wai'anae Police Station.

Sponsored by the Honolulu Police Department's District 8 and the Wai'anae Coast community, the program is designed to inform area motorists about traffic safety during the holiday season.

To drive home the point that drinking and stepping behind the wheel of a car are a potentially lethal combination, motor vehicles involved in collisions will be displayed at Nanakuli Beach Park, Ma'ili Beach Park and the Wai'anae Boat Harbor. Throughout the month — from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13, 20 and 27, and again 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 31 — HPD officers and members of the community will hold signs at the various display sites.

Kamehameha Highway from Haiku Road to Likelike Highway will be closed at 8:45 a.m. except for a section of northbound highway from Pua Inia Street to Waikalua Road that will take traffic mauka bound on Kane'ohe Bay Drive to Puohala and route it through town.

Two teens held for counterfeit bills

Police arrested two 17-year-old boys Tuesday on suspicion of printing counterfeit $20 bills with a computer color printer.

Police made the arrest in Mililani following a tip to CrimeStoppers.

Police believe the boys are the ones caught on surveillance video passing counterfeit $20 bills at the Mililani Fun Factory arcade on Aug. 1.

The first boy approached the counter and asked for change for several counterfeit $20 bills.

A couple minutes later, the second boy gave one of the bills in exchange for four $5 bills.

Both boys left the area together.
