Hawai'i Kai residents urged to move from boulder area

Residents in two buildings at the Lalea apartment complex in Hawai'i Kai are being advised to move out because of the danger of rock slides.Castle & Cooke, developer of the apartment project, and Kamehameha Schools that owns the land above Lalei issued the advisory today.
Company officials said the recommendation was made after a briefing by geologists and other experts, who found thee large boulders that may pose an immediate danger because of their apparent instability.
The assessment was done following a Nov. 28 rockslide that damaged two cars and an apartment. No was injured in the incident.
"Safety is the only issue of importance at this time, and we have developed a temporary relocation plan for the affected Lalea residents of the two buildings so they are not exposed to this potential danger," said Castle & Cooke President Harry Saunders and Kamehameha Schools chief executive officer Hamilton McCubbin.
