Rainbow Wahine sweep Huskies

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i dug deep to reach its 19th NCAA Volleyball Championship regional tonight, holding off Washington 30-26, 39-37, 30-25. The Rainbow Wahine (32-1) will find out where they go this weekend. The Huskies (20-11) are the second of eight Pac-10 tournament teams to go home.

Washington, as it had in four-game loss in September, gave Hawai'i all it could handle. Rainbow All-Americas Lily Kahumoku (22 kills) and Kim Willoughby (19) had to create kills most of the night before a Stan Sheriff crowd of 5,774. Both hit some 100 percentage points below their average.

And still, Hawai'i swept, closing out UW in dramatic fashion in every game.

Hawai'i, the tournament's No. 6 seed, advances to the Central Regional. In another Central sub-regional match today, Nebraska, the third seed, defeated Tennessee-Martin, 30-13, 30-17, 30-14. The Cornhuskers face Arizona State in the second round today.
