Search continues for Kane'ohe man

Police today were still searching for a 50-year-old Kane'ohe man reported missing since Wednesday.

Evin Kip Hutchinson told his family that he was going hiking that day. As part of his normal routine, he is believed to have taken a city bus at 5 a.m. Wednesday in front of the Kane-'ohe Times Supermarket at 45-934 Kamehameha Highway, police said.

Hutchinson frequents Windward trails and also has been known to hike at Tantalus. HPD investigator Phil Camero said Hutchinson did not tell his family where he was hiking that day.

"We're looking for witnesses who may have seen him get on or off a bus, or anyone hiking who saw him on a specific trail," said Camero, who said a police helicopter was sent to search those general areas.

Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said fire search crews are on standby while police try to determine Hutchinson's whereabouts.

Hutchinson is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a pink T-shirt, black pants, white-and-blue athletic shoes and carrying a black-and-green backpack.

Those with information may call Camero at 529-3394, or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on your cellular phone.

Maui victim, man remain critical

A Maui woman shot in the face Wednesday night at her Honokowai condominium and the man suspected of shooting her remained in critical condition this morning at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said the 44-year-old woman's condition has improved, but investigators were still waiting to interview her to find out what happened.

Police were called at 7:50 p.m. to investigate an abuse case at the Hale Royale and found the injured woman, who had managed to get help from a neighbor, said Capt. Gary Yabuta of the Criminal Investigation Division.

The 48-year-old man was later discovered in a pineapple field above Honokowai near the Kapalua-West Maui Airport with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest, Yabuta said.

Two gunmen rob Waimalu store

Two men robbed a Waimalu video store at gunpoint last night, stealing cash from the business and a customer's car.

It was the ninth armed robbery or attempted robbery on O'ahu since Sunday.

The two men walked into the store at 11:55 p.m. with their faces covered and carrying firearms, police said. The robbers took car keys from a store patron and money from the store employee.

The robbers left in the customer's car, which was later found a mile away. No one was injured in the incident, police said.
