ANNE DEARCE ARNALD, 93, of San Francisco, died Nov. 22, 2002. Born in Hawai'i. Moved to San Francisco in the 1940s. Survived by sisters, Ramona deArce and Helena Bailey. Committal service 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Arrangements by Williams Funeral Services.

ALEJANDRO GARCES CABAONG, 79, of Kaunakakai, Moloka'i, died Nov. 27, 2002. Born in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Survived by wife, Felipa; daughters, Shirley Kudrich, Nena Bali and Marilyn Moyers-Cabaong. Visitation 6 to 9 p.m. today at Saint Sophia Catholic Church, Kaunakakai. Visitation also from 8 a.m. tomorrow at the church; Mass 10:30 a.m.; burial to follow at Kapa'akea Cemetery.

TOSHIO "BARON" EBESUGAWA, 89, of Hilo, Hawai'i, died Dec. 1, 2002. Born in Hilo. Retired general manager of Ebisu's Ltd. in Hilo. Survived by sons, Baron "Jr.," Cary, Duane and John; daughter, Mary Nishi; sisters, Tsuyako "Nappie" Ebisugawa, Kiyoko "Kay" Ushijima, Setsuko "Sets" Kobayashi, Nobuko "Ann" Kaya, Satsuki "Sachi" Ebesugawa and Ruby Maruyama; four grandchildren. Visitation 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Dodo Mortuary, Hilo; service 6 p.m. Casual attire.

MARY CHICKERING ERDMAN, a young widow whose name became synonymous with the saving of Diamond Head and Punchbowl, and with the successful battle against billboards in Hawai'i, has died at her home in McMinnville, Ore. She was 97. Erdman is survived by her daughter, Louise Erdman Larsen of Salem; granddaughter, Jennifer Larsen Morrow; grandson, Nils Harold Larsen; and two great-granddaughters. Memorial gifts to Pacific Botanical Garden in her name are welcome. The family plans a Hawai'i celebration of her life in January.

ELSIE SOUZA ESCALERA, 85, of Honolulu, died Dec. 1, 2002. Born in Honolulu. A teacher retired from St. Patrick's School. Survived by daughter, Jean Freitas; six grandsons; three great-grandchildren; sister, Lillian DeRego; caregiver, Jan Black. Visitation 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Star of the Sea Catholic Church; Mass 9:30 a.m.; burial 11 a.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park. No flowers. Aloha attire.

FRANCIS I. HIRAKAWA, 75, died Nov. 20, 2002. Born in Honolulu. Reporter for the Hawai'i Tribune Herald, later a Big Island correspondent for both United Press International and The Honolulu Advertiser, and public information officer at Hawaiian Tel. Survived by wife, Haruko; daughter, Lisa; sister, Haru Mahelona; brother, Howard. Private service held at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Arrangements by Hosoi Garden Mortuary.

FRANCIS TOYOICHI KANESHIRO, 90, of Honolulu, died Nov. 20, 2002. Born in Okinawa. A retired physician and surgeon and member of Hui Makaala. Survived by wife, Haruko; son, Francis; daughter, Patricia Hansen; two grandchildren. Private service held. Arrangements by Hosoi Garden Mortuary.

AGNES ABBIE KALEI KING, 77, of Hilo, Hawai'i, died Dec. 2, 2002. Born in Honu'apo, Ka'u, Hawai'i. Retired Seven Seas restaurant cook. survived by daughters, Bertha Kanae and Quincie Martines; brothers, Raymond, Sebastian and Jack Mokiao; sisters, Lei Yoshioka, Cecelia Mokiao and Stacy Elfering; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren. PITOAU LOPA, 82, of 'Aiea, died Nov. 23, 2002. Born in Vailoatai, Tutuila, American Samoa. One of the original Fitafita Guards, U.S. Navy. Survived by sons, Jimmy and Peter; daughters, Virginia Vitale, Maketa Rodgers, Uluvalu Lopa, Leilani Ripley and Pualani McDurmin; brother, Talifaia Tuatagaloa; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. JOAN K. MOLLENA, 68, of Kahului, Maui, formerly of Moloka'i, died Nov. 28, 2002. Born on Moloka'i. Attended the Hawaiian Protestant Church. Survived by husband, Joseph Sr.; mother, Ethel Kaaihue; sons, Melvin and Alfred; daughters, Bernice Traxler and Rochelle Kaaihue; brother, William Kaaihue; sisters, Puanani Johnson and Cheryl Kang; 28 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.
