The Honolulu Marathon celebrates its 30th anniversary with one of its biggest turnouts in years i more than 29,000 runners are expected to take off at 5 a.m. Sunday morning. The route, the finish and some highlights of the race.

Male contenders

Mbarak Hussein

(Wearing No. 1)

• Kenya, age 35

• Two-time Honolulu Marathon winner

• 2001 Honolulu Marathon: 2:15:09, 1st place

• Best time in Honolulu: 2:14:53 in 1998, 1st place

• Lifetime bests: Marathon—2:09:46 on Nov. 3, 2002; 10K—27:45 (1999)

• Fun fact: An invitation to a UH football game years ago surprised Hussein. He thought he was attending a soccer match. He is the younger brother of three-time winner and course record holder Ibrahim Hussein.


Jimmy Muindi

(Wearing No. 5)

• Kenya, age 30

• 1999 and 2000 Honolulu Marathon winner

• 2001 Honolulu Marathon: 2:15:39, 3rd place

• Lifetime bests: Marathon—2:08:24 on Sept.30, 2002; 10K—27:15

• Fun fact: Family members in Kenya know what time his races begin and start to pray. In nine Honolulu Marathons, he has never finished out of the top four.


Ondoro Osoro

(Wearing No. 9)

• Kenya, age 35

• Lifetime best: Marathon—2:06:54 in 1998 (world's fastest-ever debut)

• Fact: Formerly ranked No. 1 in the world at the marathon, this Kenyan superstar survived a gunshot wound through the neck during a carjacking in 2000. Having overcome nerve damage to the right side of his body, his race is part of his remarkable comeback.
