Take in a little night opera with 'Amahl'; the kids will love it

Maybe you need that extra push to get you truly into the holiday spirit. Here's a suggestion: The Christmas classic "Amahl and the Night Visitors" will be performed by the Hawaii Opera Theatre at 5 and

7 p.m. today and tomorrow at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu, 1822 Ke'eaumoku St.

The American opera, composed by Gian Carlo Menotti, is about a crippled shepherd boy who gives a gift from the heart and receives a healing one in return.

"Amahl and the Night Visitors" features Justin Chun and Scott Wong as Amahl and Mary Chestnut as his mother. James Price, Patrick McNichols and Quinn Kelsey play the three kings, Julius Ahn the page. The chorus is composed of Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio members and First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu singers.

Tickets are $10 general, $5 for those under 18. See www.hawaiiopera.org.
