Hawai'i's Wilson opens two-shot Q-School lead

Associated Press

Kane'ohe's Dean Wilson shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to maintain his lead at the halfway point of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament at La Quinta, Calif.

Wilson, at 14-under-par 202 through three rounds, holds a two-stroke advantage over John Morgan and a four-stroke lead over Tommy Tolles. Morgan shot a 65 and Tolles had a 64.

Wilson made four birdies at PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course on his way to a second consecutive bogey-free round.

"I think I only found trouble on one hole and I was able to make a par there so overall I'm really happy," said Wilson, a Castle High graduate and member of the Japan Golf Tour the past two seasons. "There are three more rounds to go so you have to treat it just like any other tournament."

The top 35 and ties in the six-round event on PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and Stadium Course will receive 2003 PGA Tour cards. The next 50 — or the number nearest to 50 with ties — will receive Nationwide Tour cards.

WORLD CHALLENGE

Tiger leads by one: Tiger Woods birdied all the par 5s and laughed when his worst swing of the day wound up 2 feet from the hole. When the round was over, he had a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke lead over Davis Love III and Padraig Harrington in the Target World Challenge at Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Woods was at 11-under 133 after rounds over the 7,025-yard Sherwood Country Club course.
