Foyle propels BYU-Hawai'i past Lees-McRae

Alexus Foyle scored 27 points and Scott Salisbury 21 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Lees-McRae (N.C.), 83-56, in a men's college basketball game last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

Salisbury grabbed 13 rebounds for the Seasiders, who outrebounded the Bobcats 40-30.

The Seasiders held the Bobcats to 18 first-half points and 23-percent shooting to take a 38-18 lead.

BYUH improved to 5-1, the Bobcats dropped to 0-5.

Jermaine Johnson scored 18 for Lees-McRae.

MORE BASKETBALL

• Hilo wins: Ryan Abraham's 19 points and eight rebounds boosted the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to an 89-81 victory over Fort Lewis College (Colo.) yesterday at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

The Vulcans, who have won three in a row, are 5-2. Fort Lewis is 1-5. UH-Hilo plays the University of Hawai'i-Manoa in an exhibition game at Stan Sheriff Center tomorrow.

Kyle Bartholomew and Osadonor Esene added 14 points apiece for the Vulcans. Hilo had eight steals, including three by Kimo Keiter-Charles.

Kevin Hatch led Fort Lewis with 21 points and six rebounds.

• Chaminade loses: Cal State Stanislaus outscored Chaminade 9-6 in overtime to defeat Silverswords, 83-80, at McCabe gym last night.

The Silverswords shot 62 percent from the field in the first half and took a 39-33 lead. But Chaminade shot 43 percent in the second half and Stanislaus shot 62 percent to tie the score at 74 at the end of regulation.

Bernard McIntosh and Jeff Davenport each scored 22 points for Stanislaus (2-2). McIntosh added 11 rebounds. Mike Donegan led Chaminade (1-6) with 23 points.

TRIATHLON

• Race director out: Sharron Ackles was released as race director of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, according to World Triathlon Corporation, which runs the annual event in Kailua, Kona.

Ackles has been race director since 1992.

"We feel the race has reached a plateau and felt it was time for a new perspective," World Triathlon Corporation president Lew Friedland said in a news release.

A committee will select a new race director.

Next year's Ironman, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary, is scheduled for Oct. 18.

• Na Koa: University of Hawai'i head football coach June Jones and assistant coach Tyson Helton will show coaches' game film and provide analysis of last night's game against San Diego State at tomorrow's Na Koa booster club meeting.

• Quarterback Club: University of Hawai'i football associate head coach George Lumpkin and offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Nelson Maeda, head coach of state football runner-up Castle High and Mona Ah Hoy, head coach of Kahuku High's state champion volleyball team, will be honored as the outstanding male and female sportspersons for the month of November.

SWIMMING

• Bloch breaks own mark: University of Hawai'i swimmer Cheyne Bloch broke his own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 53.92 seconds in the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, Friday.

Bloch surpassed his record of 54.38 during a preliminary race, and later placed second.

Hawai'i's men's team is in sixth out of 12 teams with 225 points. Texas leads with 504. The women's team is 10th out of 13 teams with 61 points. Texas leads with 598 points.

CROSS COUNTRY

• Western Regional: Hawai'i high school cross country champions J.B. Bolson of Kamehameha, Nicole Anderson of Iolani and several other Hawai'i runners participated in the Footlocker Western Regional Cross Country Meet yesterday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Bolson, a senior, placed 215th out of 236 runners, with a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds. Anderson, a sophomore, placed 86th out of 138, in 20:18.
