HILO, Hawai'i The Hawai'i County Police Commission today named Lawrence Mahuna as the Big Island's new police chief.

Mahuna, 52, has been acting chief since August, when former Chief James S. Correa retired to head federal security at the Hilo and Kona airports. Mahuna previously was assistant chief in charge of the Administrative Bureau. He first joined the Police Department in February 1973.

Mahuna is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and graduated from Washington State University with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. He was selected from among four finalists, all currently employed by the Big Island police department.
