THE LEFT LANE
Selling 'La Boheme'

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Yesterday, "La Boheme" premiered at the Broadway Theatre in New York. The first opera ever to be presented on Broadway, it is produced by Baz Luhrmann with artistic direction by Catherine Martin — the same visionary team that created the movie "Moulin Rouge."

In conjunction with the opening, Montblanc stores around the country, including the one in Ala Moana Center, will feature "La Boheme" windows and products, combining fashion and function. The Montblanc La Boheme pen collection and La Vie de Boheme leather collection are a bit more youthful and bohemian than the company's more conservative lines.

DJs join AIDS fight

IKON

Omiyage outpouring

Among the customs that define the elusive culture we call "local" is omiyage — our take on the Japanese habit of bringing gifts back to friends, family and coworkers. In Hawai'i, these gifts almost invariably are food.

Now, on the heels of their other successful "Puka" restaurant guides, Donovan M. Dela Cruz (soon to be Honolulu Councilman Dela Cruz) and

Jodi Endo Chai have compiled the definitive guide to gift goodies from the Islands "The Omiyage Guide: Island Gifts to Go," a great help. The book is in stores today (Watermark, $8.95).
