Phengsavath top Amatour golfer

Joe Phengsavath overcame a six-stroke deficit yesterday to win the final event of the inaugural Amatour Hawai'i season and clinch Player of the Year honors.
Phengsavath shot a final-round 69 at the New 'Ewa Beach Golf Club to beat first-round leader Paul Kimura by one stroke.
Phengsavath, who birdied Nos. 14, 15, 16 and 17, finished with a two-round total of 4-over 148.
Kimura, who opened with a 73, closed with a 76 to finish at 149.
Robbie Yoshimura finished third with 77151.

Junior champions: Christopher Souza and Michelle Wie won their respective 15-18 age divisions of the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Tournament of Champions yesterday at Wailea's Emerald course.
Souza shot 79159 and beat out Walter Ching (also 79159) in a match of scorecards.
Wie shot 73150 and also won in a match of scorecards with Dale Gammie (74150).
Travis Toyama, who was disqualified in yesterday's round, and Lehua Wise, who placed third with a 151, earned Player of the Year honors based on points accumulated throughout the HSJGA season.
Souza, Wie, Toyama and Wise qualified for the 2003 Sony Open in Hawai'i Pro-Junior Challenge.
Also winning their divisions of the tournament were: Chad Nonaka (13-14) with 76150, Mari Chun (13-14) with 74154, T.J. Kua (11-12) with 76151, Ha'aheo Manini-Hew Len (11-12) with 78163, Tommy Yamashita (10-under) with 77 and Hee Sue Condry (10-under) with 89.
WEIGHTLIFTING
Yamauchis place: Brothers Bryce and Kyle Yamauchi placed second and third, respectively, at the American Open Weightlifting Championships in Savannah, Ga., last weekend.
Bryce, 17, earned a silver medal with a two-lift total of 435 pounds in the 123-pound class. The two lifts were the snatch at 193 pounds and the clean and jerk at 243 pounds.
Kyle, 19, won a bronze medal in the 136-pound class with a 226-pound snatch and 259-pound clean and jerk for a total of 485 pounds.
Bryce is a senior at Punahou and Kyle is an electrical engineering student at the University of Hawai'i. They are coached by their father, John Yamauchi, a former weightlifting champion.
