Ship passenger found in Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i — A woman missing from the Norwegian Wind cruise ship was found yesterday in good health.

Danie N. Haili, 40, of Kahuku, was found about 8:30 a.m. on 'Apapane Street in Keaukaha, said police Lt. Steven Guillermo.

Haili was reported missing Saturday when she could not be found after the ship left Hilo. No information was provided on why she failed to board the ship.

Hale'iwa parade to greet Santa

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be featured guests at Christmas in Hale'iwa 2002, the annual Hale'iwa Christmas parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Weed Circle, passes Anahulu Bridge and ends at Hale'iwa Beach Park.

Following the parade, kids of all ages can visit Santa from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Shore Marketplace Stage Area. Santa returns from 3:30 to 5 p.m. There will be a Christmas program at the Waialua Community Association Building from 6 to 9 p.m.

Ala Wai dredging in second phase

American Marine Corp., the contractor of the Ala Wai Canal dredging project, yesterday began working double-time on the second phase of the project.

Work hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The second phase is expected to be completed in June 2003.

Phase 2 of the canal dredging project begins at the McCully Street bridge and will end about 1,600 feet beyond the Manoa-Palolo drainage canal.

An estimated 140,000 cubic yards of material will be removed and contractors will dredge to a depth of about 10 feet.


Fund-raiser set for UH player

Sheraton hotels in Waikiki will hold a fund-raiser for former University of Hawai'i football player Nate Jackson Dec. 19 at the Sheraton Waikiki Ballroom.

The event — "A Flyin' Hawaiian Christmas Concert" — begins at 7 p.m. and will feature host Robert Kekaula, and entertainment by Amy Gilliom, Sean Na'auao, Anela'ikalani, Moke Boy, Reign, Tino, Henry Kapono and Ernie Cruz. Tickets are $25.

Jackson was a defensive back for the Warriors. He underwent surgery last month to replace a damaged heart valve.

YWCA housing to be renovated

The YWCA's Fernhurst transitional housing program in Makiki will close Dec. 31 for extensive renovations. The facility is expected to reopen by the end of 2003.

The YWCA's Fernhurst program provides temporary housing and services to women and their children who are the victims of domestic violence or are unable to find permanent shelter.
