Roadwork will limit lanes for Windward commuters

By Mike Leidemann

There's triple trouble this week for Windward O'ahu residents trying to get to town and back.

The state Transportation Department says there will be lane closures through Friday on Likelike, Pali and Kalaniana'ole highways.

Three separate projects will require lane closures on Likelike Highway, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. all week:

  • One Honolulu-bound lane will be closed from Valley View Drive to Kula Koloa Drive for construction of retaining walls.
  • One Kane'ohe-bound lane will be closed from Nalanieha Street to Valley View Drive for slope stabilization.
  • One lane will be closed in either direction between Valley View Drive and the Burmeister Overpass for pavement restriping.

Meanwhile, one lane of Pali Highway near Castle Junction will be closed during the same times while crews install utility lines and guardrails.

And don't think you can beat the traffic by going through Makapu'u and Hawai'i Kai, either.

For one thing, there will be intermittent 20-minute closures of Kalaniana'ole Highway at Makapu'u while work continues, to prevent rockslides from above the highway.

For another, the Transportation Department also plans roadwork on Kalaniana'ole Highway in the 'Aina Haina area. One lane will be closed in either direction between the H-1 Freeway and West Hind Drive while the road is restriped and guardrails inspected.

However, as far as we know, it will be smooth sailing on the H-3 Freeway.
