THE LEFT LANE
Warhol does Vegas

Advertiser Staff and News Services

A collection of more than 50 Andy Warhol celebrity paintings and works on paper will debut at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in February. Warhol's work will be on view Feb. 7-Sept. 7 at the casino gallery. Liza Minnelli, who was a friend of the artist, will narrate an audio tour.

Among the exhibit's works will be portraits of celebrities from three decades: the 1960s with Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor, above; the 1970s with Mick Jagger, Dennis Hopper and Mao Zedong; and the 1980s with Deborah Harry, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Jackson. The exhibition also will feature one of the last complete sets of the famed 1967 Marilyn Monroe screen-print portfolio.

New Year safe haven

Looking for a refuge from New Year's Eve fireworks? Camp Timberline offers one. The facility, 1,600 feet above Makakilo, is extending a New Year's Eve invitation to families with small children and asthmatics. The American Lung Association first asked Camp Timberline, O'ahu's only mountaintop campground, to be a safe-haven site in 1999. The number of those choosing to spend the holiday watching fireworks from the camp's vantage point has grown each year.

The camp offers cabin camping and tent camping packages ranging from $10 to $28. Children younger than 4 are admitted free. The camp has basketball, volleyball courts and tetherball courts, a Keiki Clubhouse, lodge and 150 acres of hiking trails. For reservations or more information, call the camp office at 672-5441.

Far from their families

Hawai'i keiki far away from relatives can borrow ideas from scholastic.com to make a long-distance connection over the holidays. Start by talking your far-away 'ohana into participating in a mutual project by mail or (if you're techno-skilled, via e-mailed text and photos).

It might be exchanging ornaments by mail, handmade place cards or refrigerator magnets, with photos attached so you'll be thinking of each other.

A swap of cookies or other homemade treats is another option, with cooking tips and stories about the recipes included in the package, plus photos of the cooking session.
