ABC wants UH-USC football game

Whoa, Nellie.

University of Hawai'i football officials have been told ABC wants to televise next year's game between UH and Southern California.

If the arrangement is finalized, it would mark the first time since 1989 that the Warriors will appear on one of the four major television networks. The game is scheduled for Sept. 13 in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Of the Warriors' 24 football appearances on national television, 22 have been shown on ESPN, ESPN2 or TBS cable networks.

ABC televised UH's 33-13 loss to Michigan State in the 1989 Aloha Bowl and a 13-3 loss to BYU in 1981.

Keith Jackson, known for the pet phrase "Whoa, Nellie" and for dragging out "Fum-ble," would be the play-by-play announcer.
