Police bust alleged drug lab

Police yesterday raided a Waimanalo home on Humuka Loop where investigators said illegal methamphetamine drugs were being manufactured.

Officers from the Kalihi Crime Reduction Unit, assisted by Windward CRU and Specialized Services Division personnel, searched the house and seized drugs, chemical components, a rifle and ammunition, and $1,000 cash. Three men, ages 55, 54 and 50, were arrested on suspicion of promoting drugs.

Downed pole closes road

Kaukonahua Road was closed to traffic for nearly nine hours today because of a downed telephone utility pole.

The pole near the "S" turn was damaged at 12:10 a.m. today when it was struck by a car that veered off the roadway. A man, 38, who was the lone occupant of the car, was treated for injuries at Wahiawa General Hospital and released. Speed and alcohol appear to have played a part in the crash, police said.

Traffic was diverted from Kaukonahua Road until 9 a.m., when a contra-flow lane was set up. Both lanes of Kaukonahua Road were expected to be opened by 10:30 a.m.
