Suspect in armed robberies arrested

A 32-year-old man who is a suspect in several recent armed robberies was arrested by police last night in Waipahu.

Maj. Darryl Perry of the Honolulu Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division credited a Pearl City patrol officer's alertness for the arrest. Based on crime bulletin information, the officer identified the man's car parked at a gas station on Mokuola Street at 9 p.m., said Perry.

The suspect was using a telephone but fled on foot when he saw the officer approaching. He was found hiding nearby and taken into custody about 10 minutes after fleeing from the gas station.

Police believe he is the gunman responsible for Sunday's robbery at Domino's Pizza in 'Ewa, the Dec. 4 Baskin-Robbins robbery at Waipahu Town Center, and the Nov. 30 robbery at Reynolds Recycling.

He is also a suspect in yesterday's 7:38 p.m. robbery at The Salvation Army's Thrift Store on Waipahu Street.

"We were concerned about this individual because of the firearm and his state of mind," Perry said.

Police reportedly recovered firearms from the car after the arrest.

Yesterday's armed robbery was the 17th this month.
