The Buzz

Na Leo goes pops

Ahhhhh — could this be the sweet sound of Christmas?

Na Leo Pilimehana will join the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for the traditional Holiday Pops Concert 8 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The trio will blend classic local tunes with holiday favorites, as well as a few selections off its new CD, "Hawaiian Memories." The show, conducted by Matt Catingub, will also offer a few surprises, including a hula performance.

Tickets are $15-$57, at the Blaisdell box office and Ticket Plus outlets. Also visit www.honolulusymphony.com or call 792-2000.

Grinds and a touch of Las Vegas

The spirits of Christmas, Aloha and Vegas have come together for one big holiday bash at "I'm Dreaming of a Las Vegas Christmas ... Kanaka Style," today at Ko'olau Golf Club.

The Sin-City-meets-paradise yuletide affair, hosted by Bruddah Sam and Lina Girl, above, and Davey D, is complete with a casino floor (open to those 18 and older), lavish buffets and musical entertainment by Sean Na'auao and Five by 5. Lucky winners will score $5,000 in door prizes and a grand-prize trip for two to Las Vegas.

The lunch buffet ($35), begins 11 a.m. and will be Hawaiian-style with kalua pig, mahimahi macadamia and pulehu chicken. Dinner ($50) at 6 p.m. will be a prime-rib and snow-crab buffet. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Hawai'i charities. Reservations: 236-4653, ext. 241.

Floating holiday parades

Forget trying to score the best sidewalk seats at these not-your-typical Christmas parades. Boats will be the center of attention at these free events tomorrow:

  • The 6th annual Festival of Lights Boat Parade, presented by Hawaiian Electric Co., takes place 5-7 p.m. along the Hawai'i Kai Marina. For the best vantage points, consider the Hawai'i Kai Towne Center courtyard dock or Koko Marina Center's bell tower. 396-0766, 395-4737.
  • At the 8th annual Hawai'i Yacht Club Christmas Boat Parade, themed "A Hawaiian Kine Christmas," decorated vessels will parade from the Ala Wai Harbor in front of the yacht club's Aloha Dock at 5:30 p.m., down the Waikiki and Ala Moana shore, and finally to Honolulu Harbor, Pier 9 at Aloha Tower Marketplace at 6:20 p.m. Spectators can view the parade from Magic Island at 5:30 p.m. and Pier 9 at 6:20 p.m. The event is a fund-raiser for Harbor House, a nonprofit organization that feeds more than 70,000 needy families a month. 949-4622, ext. 10.

Dance the night away

Get movin' and groovin' with "Circus X," a Castle Dance Force Production continuing at Castle High School's Ronald E. Bright Theatre. A collaboration of dancers from 24-VII Dance Force companies, Dance Force Studio, Castle Dance Force, Pearl City Dance Force and Sabrina Starr Studios will come together to perform a medley of dances, including jazz, hip-hop, tango and ballet. The original numbers were arranged by Marcelo Pacleb, Tammy Torres, Ry'n Sabado, Dora Teraoka and guest choreographer Tovaris Wilson. Showtimes are 8 p.m. today and tomorrow. Tickets are $10 presale or $12 at the door. 235-5141.

Put on those jingle bells

It's as much a holiday tradition as seeing the Honolulu City Lights. The 18th annual Honolulu Advertiser Jingle Bell Run, a two-mile fun run/walk, begins 6 p.m. tomorrow from the municipal building to Aloha Tower Marketplace.

The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. at the municipal building and include entertainment by Imua and a canine costume contest. There will be a free post-run party 7 p.m. at Kapono's featuring singing-team contests, largest-group contests and a special Christmas concert by the man himself, Henry Kapono. A Jingle Bell Run trolley will also be provided before or after the run to take participants from the marketplace back to the starting point.

Applications are available at www.specialolympicshawaii.org, or register at the designated packet pick-up area at Aloha Tower Marketplace, 3-9 p.m. today or 1-4 p.m. tomorrow. The cost for adults is $30, group rate for four or more is $23 per person, and $10 for children 12 and younger. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Hawai'i. 943-8808, ext. 66.

A different touch on the piano

Ever heard of slack-key piano? That's what eclectic pianist Pierre Grill said audiences can expect at his solo recital, presented by Hawai'i Public Radio, 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio.

The French-born artist and Honolulu resident will perform selections from his newest Hawaiian CD, "Pua Lilia," as well as jazz pieces. General admission is $17.50, $15 for HPR members and $10 for students. Reservations: 955-8821.

What the Dickens!

Charles Dickens probably would have never imagined his classic story could be like this.

"Duck, Duck Scrooge: A Commedia Christmas Carol" ran last year to sold-out houses and is back for a return engagement at The ARTS at Marks Garage.

The play will be performed with improvisation around a scenario based on Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," said director Tony Pisculli. "It's very much a family show."

Showtimes are 8 p.m. today, tomorrow, Dec. 20 and 21, and 4 p.m. Sunday and Dec. 22. Tickets are $10, available at the door 30 minutes before each show. 536-8047.

Daniel Ho in concert

Joyful holiday music abounds this time of the year, and Daniel Ho's Christmas Concert is no exception.

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Ho will perform Christmas carols and cuts from his latest CD "Coolest Drop of Rain" 7:30 p.m. today at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Joining Ho will be opener and 'ukulele master Gordon Mark.

Admission is $18 general, $15 for students, seniors and academy members. Tickets are available at the academy box office; credit cards not accepted. 532-8700.

Benefit for Nate Jackson

For several years, University of Hawai'i football buffs were treated to the hard-hitting action of former Warrior Nate Jackson. Now fans are teaming up for "A Flyin' Hawaiian Christmas Concert" fund-raiser for Jackson and his family, 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom.

After suffering from complications of a viral infection, Jackson underwent successful heart surgery Nov. 21 to replace a damaged heart valve. Proceeds from the concert will help the Jackson family, which is without health insurance, with the mounting medical expenses.

Host Robert Kekaula will present a musical lineup that includes performances by Henry Kapono, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom with Ernie Cruz, Sean Na'auao, Reign, Tino, Anela'ikalani and Moke Boy. Purchase tickets, $25 per person, at Ticket Plus outlets or by calling 526-4400. 922-4422.
