Triathlon to 'promote fitness' in seniors on Sunday

Advertiser Staff

The AARP TriUmph Classic, a mini-triathlon aimed for persons ages 50 or older, will be held Sunday.

The event includes a 400-meter swim, 20-kilometer (12.4 mile) bike ride and a 5K (3.1) run.

The event will begin 7:30 a.m. and will start and finish at Schofield Barracks Richardson Swimming Pool.

More than 200 will be competing, according to race organizer Brian Clarke.

"It's to promote fitness in people over 50," Clarke said. The average age of last year's participants was 57 with participants in their 70s, Clarke said.

According to the Surgeon General, people over 50 represent the most sedentary segment of the adult population.

The Classic is the only national triathlon for people 50 years or older and is offered in 15 cities across the United States.

Packet pickup will be Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park.

Those interested in participating can sign up with no late fee. For information, contact Clarke at 737-4340.
