Mission Houses' holiday celebration glows in candlelight

Before X-Boxes and Yu-Gi-Oh!, before cell phones and Mini Coopers and other shiny, glittery things, life was pretty darn simple.

For a taste of those old-fashioned times and a true change of pace this holiday season, there's the Mission Houses Museum's Candlelight Christmas celebration, continuing 5 to 9 tonight. It includes candlelit tours of the historic houses, past live vignettes based on 19th-century journals and letters; Christmas carols; music; and refreshments.

Tickets are $10 general, $8 for kids 5-17, free for keiki younger than 5; $3 off for museum members. Reservations are recommended: 531-0481, ext. 28.

Afterward, you can return to the modern world and join fellow revelers taking in the Honolulu City Lights.
