HIGH SCHOOLS

• Whitford is Kahuku A.D.: Joe Whitford's status at Kahuku High School changed on Thursday from interim to permanent director of athletics.

Whitford received a letter from state schools superintendent Pat Hamamoto affirming his appointment. He has been interim A.D. since last summer.

Whitford, 44, coached water polo and swimming at Kahuku. He began his coaching career on Maui after graduating from the Kamehameha Schools in 1976 and Brigham Young-Hawai'i in 1984.

He was among the students who helped start outrigger canoe paddling as a high school sport in his senior year at Kamehameha.

Whitford says he will concentrate on "increasing and bettering our academics and qualifying more kids for college, or at least give them that option. We intend to monitor them more closely."

Kahuku's last permanent athletic director was Hartwell Lee Loy. who transferred to Waipahu in the summer of 2001 after nine years at Kahuku.

Whitford, his wife, Daryl, and their six children live in La'ie. Their oldest daughter, Makana, is a sophomore on the University of Hawai'i Wahine water polo team.

Girls water polo makes its debut as an O'ahu Interscholastic Association sport next spring.
