Vandals hit Kane'ohe properties

KANE'OHE — Vandals caused substantial damage to the Kane'ohe Post Office and adjacent Zippy's restaurant recently, breaking windows, lights and signs and leaving graffiti.

Kane'ohe Postmaster Ron Dowell said the criminals have hit in the late-night hours, before postal employees begin arriving for work at 2 a.m. Still, he said he's puzzled because the Zippy's next door is a well-lit, busy, 24-hour restaurant.

"I think it's somebody who is frustrated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs," Dowell said. "Maybe they have something against the post office."

Eight of the post office's 16 windows have been broken, most recently on Dec. 6. Damaged windows have been boarded. The post office has replaced one window at a cost of $250, suggesting the total repair cost will be $2,000.

Next door at Zippy's, vandals broke the bakery sign, removed letters in another sign and destroyed a spotlight after they were unsuccessful in removing the light, said a manager who did not want to be identified.

Zippy's employees have reported damage to their cars, including scratched paint, a slashed bumper and a ripped off spoiler, the manager said.

Dowell said the post office is considering installing a fence to prevent future vandalism. Police have been asked to patrol the area more frequently during the late hours, he said.

Kane'ohe-based police said they are not aware of similar acts of vandalism in the area.

Security at the post office was increased after 9/11 and the agency wants to be sure no one gets hold of its information, trucks or uniforms for terroristic or criminal activities, Dowell said.

If people see suspicious behavior, they should call 911 and report it, Dowell said.
