Space shuttle veteran Gorie to talk at UHH

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Astronaut Dominic Gorie will be the keynote speaker Jan. 25 at the third annual Ellison Onizuka Science Day program at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.

Gorie, a veteran of three space shuttle flights between 1998 and 2001, will speak at the 9:30 a.m. opening general assembly in the UHH Theatre. Workshop sessions will follow and the 2:15 p.m. closing general assembly at the UHH New Gym will feature demonstrations of "science magic," organizers said.

The event is a tribute to Hawai'i-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who died Jan. 28, 1986, in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger.

The free program Jan. 25 is for students in Grades 4-10 and their parents and for teachers of any grade level. Participants under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the day. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are available by calling the UH-Hilo Conference Center at (808) 974-7555, by e-mailing Art Kimura at art@kalama.doe.hawaii.edu or online at www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu/.

One of the sponsors, American Savings Bank, has underwritten lunch for registered students and transportation costs for students from Honoka'a, Waimea and Kona.
