Absentee vote sites set up for Jan. 4 race

By James Gonser
Advertiser Staff Writer

Voters can cast absentee ballots at walk-in sites for the Jan. 4 special congressional election beginning Wednesday through Jan. 2.

Forty-four people are running to fill the late Patsy Mink's seat in the 108th Congress. The 2nd Congressional District covers rural O'ahu and the Neighbor Islands.

Mink, who served Hawai'i in the U.S. House for 24 years, died Sept. 28, two days past the deadline to have her name removed from the general election ballot. Voters elected her posthumously Nov. 5, triggering the special election.

Absentee walk-in voting sites:

  • O'ahu: Honolulu Hale, 2nd floor, room 205, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
  • Kaua'i: Historic County Building in Lihu'e, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
  • Maui: Office of the County Clerk in Wailuku, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
  • Big Island: Hilo County Building, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday, or the Keauhou Shopping Center in Kailua, Kona, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

All locations will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Eligible voters must bring a photo ID with them.

Absentee mail-in ballots are available from county clerks on each island.
