Nanakuli, Mililani homes damaged by fires

A fire that may have been deliberately set gutted a Nanakuli house yesterday while a Mililani Mauka townhouse was saved by a smoke detector.

The Nannakuli fire at 87-117 Kahau St. caused $40,000 structural damage to a recently renovated two-story house that was being readied for rental. No one was living in the house, which was unfurnished.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said there is evidence indicating a break-in and that the fire was intentionally set.

Meanwhile, landscappers working near a Mililani Mauka townhouse at 95-1184 Makaikai St. were alerted to a fire by a smoke detector that had gone off. A fire company stationed nearby responded to the 11:39 a.m. alarm and put the fire out before it caused any serious damage.

An unattended candle in the living room started the fire, Soo said. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

Pedestrian on H-3 killed

A pedestrian was killed yesterday when he was struck by a vehicle while hitchhiking on the H-3 Freeway. The accident was reported at 6:10 a.m. and forced the closure of Kaneohe-bound lanes until 11:16 a.m.

Police said a man was walking near the shoulder of the freeway, about two miles before the tunnel, when he was struck by the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man arrested in Kalihi shooting

Police have arrested one man and are seeking other suspects in connection with a shooting incident Sunday afternoon at the 700 block of Kopke Street in Kalihi. Witnesses told police an argument on the street between two men at about 2:30 p.m. erupted into an exchange of gunfire.

According to witnesses, one of the gunmen fled in a waiting car. While leaving the scene, he allegedly fired shots from the passenger seat at the second gunman’s parked car. The second gunman, who also left the scene before police arrived, fired shots at the fleeing car.

No injuries were reported.

The 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder is believed to be the driver of the suspect car, police said. He was taken into custody after returning alone to the shooting scene while police were still there. Witnesses identified him and the car to police.

The man resisted arrest and damaged a police car while being transported to the main station, police said. He was arrested on additional counts of first-degree reckless endangering and fourth-degree criminal property damage.

Gunman robs game parlor

A video game parlor on the 600 block of Ala Moana Boulevard was robbed last night by a man who displayed the butt of a gun tucked into his pants. The robbery was reported at 10 p.m.

The man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and is still at large. Witnesses, however, provided police with the suspect's name.

Charges against felon pending

Multiple firearm and drug charges are pending against a 28-year-old felon arrested on suspicion of being illegally armed early Saturday morning on the 46-200 block of Kahuhipa Street in Kane'ohe.

Police responded to a neighborhood complaint about an argument on the street and were told that a man walking away from the scene was armed. The man dropped a bag to the ground as police approached. The butt of a gun was sticking out of the bag.

The man allegedly had a 9mm semiautomatic gun tucked in his pants. Police also recovered drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Man falls into high surf, dies

A 30-year-old visitor from La Crescencia, Calif., was killed yesterday when he fell into high surf off the Ritz-Carlton resort in Kapalua, Maui, fire officials said.

The man was walking along the rocky shore area with two brothers when he was either hit by a wave or slipped and lost his footing and plunged into the water, said Assistant Fire Chief Gordon Cordeiro.

Lifeguards were not able to approach the area, and the Fire Department was unable to put divers in the water.
