Isle telecom conference expects 1,700

Several top telecommunications industry leaders have confirmed their participation at the PTC2003 conference next month that is expected to draw more than 1,700 attendees, including top corporate executives, venture capitalists, senior industry observers and government officials.

This year's conference theme is "Global Broadband/Global Challenges," and will take place Jan. 19-23 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

"We are very pleased with this year's line-up of speakers that are sure to generate provocative discussions, challenging controversies, and lively debate," said Hoyt Zia, executive director of the Pacific Telecommunications Council.

Among the confirmed participants are:

• Charles Dalfen, chairman, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, Canada. Dalfen has written and spoken widely on communications policy and law. He has participated as a delegate to various international organizations such as the ITU, Intelsat and the United Nations Committee on Direct Broadcast Satellites.

• Dan Gillmor, technology columnist, San Jose Mercury News, Silicon Valley's daily newspaper. He also writes a daily Web-based column for SiliconValley.com, a KnightRidder.com site that is an online affiliate of the Mercury News.

• Irwin Jacobs, co-founder, chairman and CEO, QUALCOMM Inc., a Fortune 500 leader in developing and delivering digital wireless communications products and services

• Shyue-Ching Lu, Ph.d., president and CEO, Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd., the biggest mobile operator in Taiwan with more than 7 million subscribers — about 34 percent of the market share in Taiwan.

• Sachio Semmoto, founder, chairman and CEO of eAccess Ltd., Japan and co-founder of Japan's first private telephone company, Personal Handy-Phone System and DDI Corporation.

• Masayoshi Son, president and CEO, Softbank Corp., with stakes in 600 companies.

The event also will feature more than 40 concurrent sessions, workshops and panels, and more than 50 exhibitors showcasing the latest products in the industry.

The Honolulu-based Pacific Telecommunications Council is an international, nonprofit organization that promotes the development of telecommunications and related industries in the Pacific, with an emphasis on developing countries.
