Hitchhiker killed along H-3 Freeway

A pedestrian was killed yesterday when he was struck by a vehicle while hitchhiking on the H-3 Freeway. The accident was reported at 6:10 a.m. and forced the closure of Kane'ohe-bound lanes until 11:16 a.m.

Police said a man was walking near the shoulder of the freeway, about two miles before the tunnel, when he was hit. He was dead at the scene.

Nanakuli fire may have been set

A fire that appears to have been deliberately set yesterday gutted a Nanakuli house. Meanwhile a Mililani Mauka townhouse was saved by a smoke detector.

The Nanakuli fire at 87-117 Kahau St. caused $40,000 damage to a recently renovated two-story house that was being readied for rental. No one was living in the house.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Richard Soo said there's evidence indicating a break-in and that the fire was intentionally set.

Meanwhile, landscape workers near a Mililani Mauka townhouse at 95-1184 Makaikai St. were alerted by a smoke detector alarm. A fire company stationed nearby responded at 11:39 a.m. and put the fire out.

An unattended candle in the living room started the fire, Soo said. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

Arrest made in Kalihi gunfight

Police have arrested one man and are seeking other suspects in connection with a gunfight Sunday afternoon at the 700 block of Kopke Street in Kalihi. Witnesses told police an argument on the street between two men at about 2:30 p.m. erupted into gunfire.

According to witnesses, one of the gunmen fled in a waiting car. While leaving the scene, he allegedly fired shots from the passenger seat at the second gunman's parked car.

The second gunman, who also left the scene before police arrived, fired shots at the fleeing car.

No injuries were reported.

The 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder is believed to be the driver of the fleeing car, police said. He was taken into custody after returning alone to the shooting scene while police were still there. Witnesses identified him and the car.

Gunman robs video game parlor

A video game parlor on the 600 block of Ala Moana was robbed Sunday night by a man who had a gun tucked into his trousers. The robbery was reported at 10 p.m.

The man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and is still at large. Witnesses, however, have provided police with the name of a suspect.

Felon held on firearms charges

A 28-year-old felon has been charged for being illegally armed early Saturday morning on the 46-200 block of Kahuhipa Street in Kane'ohe.

Jean Aki, of Ho'opala Street, was charged Sunday on three firearm possession counts and two drug-related counts. He's being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police responded to a neighborhood complaint about an argument on Kahuhipa Street and were told by witnesses that Aki, who was walking away from police, was armed. Police said Aki dropped a bag with a gun in it to the ground as they approached.

Police also said Aki, a felon wanted on a parole violation warrant, had a 9mm pistol tucked in his trousers.
