Two names familiar to longtime University of Hawai'i women's volleyball fans — Ka'apuni and Shota — took top honors on the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division girls all-star list.

Pearl City senior middle blocker Chalice (pronounced "shyeah-lis") Ka'apuni, a niece of former Rainbow Wahine All-American Joyce Ka'apuni, was named Player of the Year. And Chargers coach Stephanie Shota, a former UH defensive specialist (1990-93), was named Coach of the Year.

Ka'apuni and Shota helped Pearl City to a 10-0 record in the regular season.

"On our team, she was our go-to girl," Shota said of Ka'apuni. "She had a real good block, and her offense was pretty strong. Overall, I thought she was the most consistent player (in the West) through the whole season."

Ka'apuni is joined on the first team by four Leilehua players — senior outside hitter Annie Lanoza, junior middle blocker Pikake Nutter-Gaudet, senior setter Melissa Sekigawa and senior backrow specialist Antionette Lalita. Nanakuli junior Kaena Apana, Mililani senior Amber Wiedermann and Waipahu junior Tanya Lauifi also made the first team.

Shota was named Coach of the Year after leading a relatively inexperienced team to the West championship.

"With the personnel we had, there was not a lot of volleyball experience," Shota said. "We went a lot farther than I expected. I'm proud of how far we made it."
