The Iolani School girls volleyball team lost four starters from its 2001 state championship team, but the Raiders did return Kanoe Kamana'o, and that was plenty.
Kamana'o, a 5-foot-8 senior setter/outside hitter, led the Raiders (13-3) to a runner-up finish in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and a return appearance in the state tournament. Her superb setting and efficient hitting made her a double threat on offense and also earned her ILH Player of the Year honors for the second straight season.
Kamana'o was joined on the first team by teammate Rae Woolford, a senior outside hitter. Other first-team selections are Kamehameha junior outside hitter Mounia Nihipali and senior defensive specialist Hoku Tamayori, La Pietra senior outside hitter Alicia Arnott, Punahou sophomore outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru, University junior setter Ashley Kau and Hawai'i Baptist senior setter Tiffany Butac.
Cubi-Otineru was named Student Sports Inc./PowerBar Athlete of the Week for the West Region on Oct. 11 after notching a match-high 37 kills and 20 digs in the Buffanblu's three-game loss to Iolani the previous Friday.
Kamehameha's Joey Miyashiro, who guided the Warriors (15-0) to the ILH championship, was named Coach of the Year.
